Adult Baptism

Though baptisms in the Church of England tend to be of infants, there are many people who are not baptised until later in life. You can be baptised at any age, and it is often argued that by being baptised as a youth or an adult it is something you are doing of your own accord, rather than because of your parents’ wishes.

The member of clergy who will baptise you would want to have discussions with you beforehand to ensure you know what baptism means and what you are promising when you take your baptism vows.

Ideally, though not necessarily, an adult will be baptised as part of a regular Sunday Service, or it can be done as part of a Confirmation Service along with other adults who are being confirmed but who have not yet been baptised. Another option is to be baptised at a small private service with just a few supporters there.

The journey to baptism as an adult is an exciting one in which you learn more about Christian faith and worship and have the opportunity to ask questions and reflect on what baptism will mean for you.
